TITLE The kind Velates (Gastropoda, Neritoidea): Studies morphological and structural characteristics of species and taxonomic perspectives. Stratigraphic and paleogeographic gender Author : PLAZIAT Jean-Claude Abstract Under the name of Velates perversus or Velates schmideli, and under numerous other pre-linnean and later synonyms, this Ypresian species is one of the most famous fossil mollusk of the Tertiary, However, characterization of the genus and of its subordinate species remains surprinzigly vague, which explains modern misunderstandings and misinterpretations of their stratigraphic and paleogeographic distributions. The generic ontogenesis and a critical review of specific characteristics lead to the exclusion of several Cretaceous species, reducing the range of Velates from Middel Paleocene (Landenian) to Late Eocene (Priabonian) times. A discussion of the Oligocene (Italian) records does not settle the question of its possible Middle Oligocene range extension. The distribution of this snail with a very special adaptation to an endopsammic way of life, distributed in Paleogene basins of the extended subtropical domain, makes this genus as one of the most representative of the early Tertiary.
